Commandments for Jihad

Is Islam a religion of aggressiveness and fight? What does Islam teach about Love and Mercy? Learn about these from this article… Literally, the Arabic word Jihad means Strive; and according to the religious point of view Jihad means, Strive for the Cause of Allah, therefore in broad sense, Strive to hold the Word of Allah in own life, and to spread it among everyone. It is one of the best acts for the followers of Allah. But there are different beliefs and confusions about Jihad among people. So, in this chapter we will discuss about Jihad. .

Reason and Importance of Jihad

While discussing about Jihad, the first question arises about the reason and importance of Jihad, and about it Quran teaches that:

“… what is wrong with you that you Strive not in the Cause of Allah, and for those (who are spiritually) weakill-treated (by Devil and his followers) and oppressed (in Sin) among menwomenand childrenwhose cry is: “Our Lord! Rescue us from this town whose people are oppressors, and raise for us from You one who will protect, and raise for us from You one who will help.”

(Quran, An Nisa 4:75)

“Strive against those who (1) believe not in Allah, (2) nor in the Last Day, (3) nor forbid that which has been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger Muhammad (4) and those who acknowledge not the religion of truth among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) …”

(Quran, At Taubah 9:29)

“And Strive (against) them until there is no more persecution and the religion will all be for Allah Alone …”

(Quran, Al Anfal 8:39)

This means, Jihad is so much necessary to save the people who are in suffering for their Sins, and to establish the religion of Almighty Creator making a strong protest against everything evil.

Why is Jihad the Best Act

A true Submitter (to Allah) surely leads a righteous life according to the Teaching of Allah, and performs different activities for the Cause of Allah. Among these activities, Jihad is the Best one. The reason of why Jihad the best act is written in Quran that:

“Those who believe (on Allah, they) Strive in the Cause of Allah, and those who disbelieve (on Allah, they) Strive in the cause of Devil. So fight (in spirit) against the friends of Satan …”

(Quran, An Nisa 4:76)

“Those who believed (on Allah) and emigrated and Strove (did Jihad) and fought (in spirit) in the Cause of Allahwith their wealth and their lives are far higher in degree with AllahThey are the successful.”

(Quran, At Taubah 9:20)

Not equal are those of the believers, who sit (at home) – except those who are disabled (for physical injury), and those who Strive (do Jihad) in the Cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives. Allah has preferred in grades those who (do) Jihad with their wealth and their lives above those who sit (at home). Unto eachAllah has promised good (in Paradise), but Allah has preferred those by (submitters) a huge reward who Strive (do Jihad)above those who sit (at home).”

(Quran, An Nisa 4:95)

So, Allah commands His followers for Jihad in this way:

“March forth, whether you are light (in youth being healthy and wealthy) or heavy (in old age being ill or weak), and strive hard with your wealth and your lives in the Cause of Allah. This is better for you …”

(Quran, At Taubah 9:41)

But there are some people who can’t keep faith while they are in Jihad because of their fear of various sufferings; and when they fall in any suffering, they rebuke their Allah for those. But Allah teaches that, the people who truly devote themselves for Jihad, Allah is always beside them to help. As it is written that:

“Of mankind are some who say: “We believe in Allah.” But if they are made to suffer for the sake of Allah, they consider the trial of mankind as Allah’s punishment; and if victory comes from your Lord, (the hypocrites) will say: “Verily we were with you (helping you)” …”

(Quran, Al Ankabut 29:10)

.“O you who believe! If you help (in the Cause of) Allah, He will (surely) help you, and make your foothold firm.”

(Quran, Muhammad 47:7)

The Actual Way of Jihad

As each believer should join Jihad, they surely should understand the Actual Way of Jihad; otherwise the Jihad will not be perfect. People around us think in different ways about the Way of Jihad. But we should look at what Almighty Creator Allah teaches about this. And, Allah teaches that:

“… (do) Jihad against them (by preaching) with the utmost endeavor with it (Quran).”

(Quran, Al Furqan 25:52)

“… Repel (the evil deeds) with one which is better, then verily he, between whom and you there was enmity, (will become) as though he was a close friend.”

(Quran, Fussilat 41:34)

“There is no compulsion in religion. Verily, the Right Path has become distinct from the wrong path.”

(Quran, Al Baqarah 2:256)

“… They (are misguided who) change the words from their (right) places and have abandoned a good part of the Message that was sent to them (from Allah). And you will not cease to discover deceit in them, except a few of them. But forgive them and overlook (their misdeeds). Verily, Allah loves (such) good-doers

(Quran, Al Ma’idah 5:13)

“… ascribe not purity to yourselves …”

(Quran, An Najm 53:32)

“… turn not your face away from men with pride … And be moderate in your walking, and lower your voice …”

(Quran, Luqman 31:18-19)

“Allah likes not prideful boasters”

(Quran, Al Hadid 57:23)

“… Don’t insult those (idols) whom they (the disbelievers) worship besides Allah …”

(Quran, Al An’am 6:108)

“… say those words that are the best …”

(Quran, Al Isra 17:53)

Do not exceed the limits in your Religion”

(Quran, An Nisa 4:171)

“… do not kill anyone whose killing Allah has forbidden, except for a just cause (according to the Teaching of Allah) …”

(Quran, Al Isra 17:33)

“… if anyone killed a person – unless it be for killing a person (illegally), or to spread mischief in the land – it would be as if he killed all mankind, and if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of all mankind …”

(Quran, Al Ma’idah 5:32)

Now let us point out what we have learned from these verses:

  • Quran is the weapon of Jihad, not any worldly weapon like guns or bombs. The Word of Allah, given through Quran, will help us to oppose the evil and to survive on the Way of Allah.
  • Whatever we do, we should do the best according to the Will of Allah; neither according to what our mind says, nor like the misguided disbelievers.
  • We should forgive the misguided disbelievers, and should overlook what they do. We neither should insult them, nor should show up our goodness being boastful.
  • We shouldn’t force anyone to accept what we believe or do. As there is no matter of forcing, then we surely can’t fight or punish someone who don’t believe or follow as we do.
  • We should not insult any Idol or Deity of any other religion.
  • We surely should not exceed the limit of our Religion.
  • We can’t kill any person without any legal cause (according to the Teaching of Allah). If we save a life, it will be the best act like as we have saved the entire mankind.

We never should hurt or punish or kill a person, if even the person disagrees with our religious beliefs and activities; because this is surely not a good solution according to the Teaching of Allah. We should fight against their Mind, not against the Body, because:

  • A person’s body never controls his mind, but it is his mind that controls his body. And surely, he will hold his beliefs in his mind, not in his body.
  • If we try to change someone’s belief hurting or punishing his body, then it will be like we are trying to change him by force, which is against the will of Allah. And Allah wants that, a person’s beliefs will be buildup on that person’s Proper Knowledge of UnderstandingFeelings and Willingness – which are the parts of Mind, not body.
  • If we kill a person it will never change a person’s mind. Moreover, as we are not aware of future, and can’t say that whether a person will be changed in future or not. So, if we kill a disbeliever, it will be like, we are taking the chance of his conversion (to truth) away from him. And, moreover, as we have no power to create a body, we have no power to kill any body.

Thus Allah teaches that, Jihad is the best act for all the believers; because, Jihad is to bring peace for mankind on earth, and also to give the confirmation of peace in hereafter. And, as Jihad is for peace, we should do it with peace.

So, let’s check some questions.

  • Is Quran teaching not to work hard for the Cause of Almighty Creator?
  • Is Quran teaching to fight or kill people while doing Jihad?
  • Does Jihad means fighting with arms and bombs?

It is sure that the answer of these questions is, NO.

Remember Some Facts

Jihad doesn’t mean “Fight”; it means “Strive for the Cause of Allah”.

Quran teaches to work hard for the Cause of Almighty Creator according to the Teaching given by Him, because it is the best act for every Believer.

Quran never teaches to Fight, but teaches to establish Peace.
